JUNE 2013 Write up in the MMM magazine by John & Janet Parkinson, Lancs

SUPER SITE  We are enclosing a short report on a lovely campsite. We have travelled extensively in Europe in our VW-based Karmann Colorado, and stayed at some fantastic sites, but Camping des Combes, in France, really impressed us, and we felt we must share it with other MMM readers. Located in the centre of France, midway between Limoges and Clermont Ferrand in the department of Creuse, is a hidden treasure of natural paradise. We followed signs from Felletin for 4km on an undulating, winding road, which follows the course of the river Creuse, with views of nature at its best over the water, and not a house in sight! Camping des Combes nestles on the edge of a 50-hectare lake. Driving down the tree-lined road to the entrance of the campsite we never expected to find such a well laid-out, well-organised and well-looked-after camping ground. The site is owned and run by an English couple, who greeted us warmly like old friends. All the pitches (25 in total) are of good size and flat, with some shade. We chose a pitch close to the shower block and the lake (for fishing purposes). The lake is stocked with a good variety of species and big too! The best roach fishing I've had since I was a boy. Most pitches have a lake view of some kind and the picnic area beside the lake is so relaxing. At one stage, while reading my book, I became aware that I could not hear anything, It was about lunchtime and even the birds were having a break. It is such a 'get away from it all' kind of campsite. We were so relaxed we didn't really want to go out exploring, except for a walk through the wood to look at the dam, which creates the lake. We could not fault the shower block: immaculately clean and tidy with toilet rolls, hand soap and towels, toilet seats as well! The owners have thought about the layout - and the positioning of the showers means that your clothes do not get wet while you shower, there is a curtain to section dry from wet area and a mat to stand on. No push-button water control or fiddly dials, just a plain old tap - easy. The office has all the usual touristy information plus a small amount of supplies in case you forget something. Also ice creams, beer and wine, plus vegetables from the garden and eggs from the chickens on the campsite. Bread and pastries can be ordered for the next morning. Books can be swapped or borrowed. We stayed for three nights, and, being September, it wasn't too busy. In fact, I really shouldn't be telling anyone about this place, I should be keeping it to myself. We definitely will be going back and for a longer stay.

13 - 22/06/2013  (NL) Willem & Ciska Vanzeil

Where shall I begin. We saw this place in the Dutch KCK. I, Ciska, told this to my husband William. He loves to fish on the carp. So in 2012 we knew where to go in 2013. We couldn't wait. Now our vacation is already over and it was over in  a split second. William prepared himself on a carp fishing session. A boat, his rods, his electronic beepers, everything had to come. It was like we were moving to France. But everything worked out very well. He caught two beautiful carps and one was smarter than William, it was lose and gone. It is quite difficult to catch a carp because you need a boat. But when yoou do , it's very rewarding. Richard wouldn't miss a second from what William caught. So everytime he heard the beeper, he came rushing down hill. Until now William has aught the heaviest carp, 18lbs, a mirror. Jill & Richard, you were lovely to us and we had a great time. You have a very nice and quiet place here. We needed that. Thanks for everything. Oh and Jill, don't forget. The word is: FLAPPENTAP.

Geweldige camping. Heerlyke verse gieren. Heel aardige mensen. Thank you.

Editorial note: many apologies if any of the above is spelt wrong!!!!!!

27 - 30/07/13  (BG)   Tim, Mark, Dave, Chris

Have just spent a very relaxed 3 days fishing, and caught a few decent sized fish, some of us caught more than others! The tent we hired was spacious and equipped with all the basic requirements for camping, good job as after rods and tackle there wasn't room for camp stuff in the car. Loved the separate kitchen/seating area, we had a bedroom each so untidy campers did not encrouch their stuff on others ( Dave and Chris). Thanks Jill for the casserole and bread dinner, if we can get permission from the other halves next year, we will be back. Thanks again (Great place)

04.2012  (GB)  Review sent to www.ukcampsite.co.uk by Alan and Jill Kahn

We've just returned from France and on our travels in appalling weather found this wonderful camp site. It' one of the loveliest sites we've pitched-up on in several years of travelling in France. It's owned and personally run by a couple of very friendly and helpful Brits who seel to understand the business. The site itself is not large but pitches are more than generous in size, most of them being marked out naturally by lopped pine trees allowing plenty of sun to reach the campers. Pitches are on level grassy terraces leading down a hillside giving access to the banks of a substantial lake formed by the damming of the River Creuse. If we'd had our own canoes we could have paddled into the sunset (i it hadn't been raining). And we were told the fishing here is excellent.

We arrived during a period of heavy rains and found the ground perfectly firm enough for any motor home. Don't be put off by the owner requesting motor homes over 6 metres to contact them in advance. The campsite is easily accessible by much larger units, especially from Felletin in the South, and its pitches can accommodate even large RVs and long caravans.

The camping environment is rural perfection. It's a great balance between camping needs (tidiness, cleanliness and good grounds maintenance) and nature's natural bits. This part of the Creuse valley is forestry, hillside and water - and somehow the campsite has managed to incorporate these features without detracting from what most campers demand of a campsite when on holiday. Wildlife is encouraged - we heard and saw green woodpeckers, nuthatch and cuckoos to name but three.

All toilets and showers have recently been refurbished and were spotless. For those used to the British way, the toilets not only have seats, but also toilet roll, hand towels and liquid soap. It was like coming home, even to the hot water out of the taps. And of course all other facilities we Brits expect were available, such as ample amperage on the hook-up (continental style) and baguettes to order.

Felletin neary is a small town of typical French character, with markets and interesting shops. And the countryside around is spectacular.

We loved this site and will definitely be returning next time we're in the area.

The very right place at the right time for us. Spending 4 lovely days at your campsite and the region of the Creuse. One of the most beautiful spots and campings of our 35 years camping life. The quietness, rest, landscape, quality of equipment: all so well and beautiful. Thanks for your hospitality and kindness that made us feel welcome and at home.

Camping charmant, très bien entretenu. Très propre, propriétaires très chaleureux. Ambiance calme et familiale.

We would like to thank you for making our holiday so enjoyable. We all came home tanned and tired, even Miggy (dog) was exhausted, he missed owning the place. You have a lovely spot in France and wish you all the best for everything in the future.

Thank you so much for your help Jill with the dog - it would have been very difficult without you. We had no problem with him at Calais, the system worked very well. We had a really lovely time and think you are so lucky to have such a beautiful site. You have both worked so hard to get it to a high standard and we wish you all the luck in the world with it. We will certainly stop over again when we lake our trip down to Spain. You looked after us so well and stright away we felt like we had known you for ages.

What a credit to all your hard work - a fabulous place with such calm
